Happy 2010! I hope your holidays were joyful, fulfilling and reenergizing. Now that the holidays are almost a memory, I am faced with the challenge of my resolutions. I don't know about you, but it seems that I make fewer each year only because age brings the wisdom that fewer resolutions means fewer failures - sometimes! So, other than my annual diet, I am going to try to be positive and enrich my lifestyle. Little things such as being more aware of the people who mean so much to me; trying to do little things that actually can make a difference.
I love the story of a harried young mother who, trying to get a few minutes to herself, was totally engrossed in a magazine article and did not hear her 2 year old asking her a question, several times over. He finally climbed up next to her , cupped her chin with his tiny hand, and said, "Mommy, you're supposed to say, 'yes, Will?'"
Its so easy to become completely involved in our work or daily routine and miss out on the important things around us. We don't even take time to take care of ourselves! I have a friend who learned years ago that when things got tense, she would retreat to her bubble bath....twenty minutes away from the cares of the world and she was renewed. It is so necessary to take that deep breath and ask ourselves if we have life in perspective. Do we have our priorities in order?
Do you suppose this decade will be an improvement over the last? Will the economy determine the course of events? How wonderful if the world could return to the simpler ways of years gone by when morality and values were the norm. How sad to think of this past decade bracketed by Enron and Tiger. Sure there were plenty of good times and memorable events and hopefully, the future will provide many more. But to get there we all must do our part-I don't mean to preach-but I do think that if each of us concentrates on the little things that make a difference, collectively we can make a big difference in the world around us.So, call your friend you haven't spoken to in a year; write that get-well note; bring that coat to the thrift shop; drop some food at the soup kitchen-you might even stay to help out. Once we think about it, it really is easy to go that extra yard or mile. That is my resolution and I hope it will be yours.Together, we can make a difference!
